Land of Ancient TerrorsIndia’s vast land is full of ghost stories from ancient times. In dark corners and misty villages, many spirits and demons wait. The churail (a female ghost with backwards feet) walks at night looking for revenge. Vetālas (spirits that take over dead bodies) challenge brave people with deadly riddles. Rakshasas (shape-changing demons) hide in thick jungles, wearing human skin to trick people. There are also prets (ghosts stuck between worlds) and churels (ghosts that steal children). Each area of India has its own scary creatures: pisachas (mountain demons), nāgas (sacred water serpents), and the feared Brahmarakshasa (a demon from a corrupt holy man). These stories mix old fears with new worries, making sure no part of India is free from spooky tales.
