The Spirit of Mae Nak
In a small village outside of Bangkok, there is a shrine dedicated to Mae Nak, a spirit famous for her tragic love story. It is said that Mae Nak died during childbirth while her husband was away at war. Upon his return, he found his wife and child waiting for him, unaware that they were both ghosts. The villagers, too afraid to tell him the truth, watched in horror as Mae Nak’s spirit protected her husband from those who tried to separate them. One night, a young couple visited the shrine to ask for blessings. As they made their offerings, they heard a soft lullaby and saw a shadow moving near the altar. Suddenly, the air grew cold, and the figure of Mae Nak appeared before them, her eyes filled with sadness. She whispered a warning, telling them to cherish their love, for death could not keep her from her husband. The couple fled the shrine, forever haunted by the spirit’s tragic tale.
